It was standing room only at the new Adams Morgan Jointly Maintained Reading Room Saturday, March 11, when the audience left walking on air from a concert of inspiring songs, and readings, organized by the JMRR’s new Librarian Caroline Brewer.
Long-time Christian Science church soloist, teacher, and mentor Avery Joseph led the singing, along with special selections by high school and college students that he coaches. Pianist Robert Kraig ably accompanied Mr. Joseph. The evening began with an interactive reading of I Corinthians 13, which defines love. It was followed by Mr. Joseph’s elegant singing of a version of the same text in “The Gift of Love,” arranged by Hal H. Hopkins.
As the audience let the love fill their thought and their ears, Mr. Joseph introduced four students from the Eleanor Roosevelt High School Men’s Ensemble, who offered a beautiful and powerful song by Raymond Reeder called “Lord We Need to Know.” Chris Howard, Abel Banko, and Barry Roache sang, as Meka Ariwaodo accompanied them on the piano. The audience gave them a standing ovation.
This event marks the first of what the librarian hopes will be many more events to come, open to the public, to convey the values and love of Christian Science to the broader community.
